"When I attended my first Kripalu yoga class I knew right away that it was different from anything I had done before. I had practiced yoga a few times over the previous couple of years so I had a beginners knowledge of some of the basic postures. What I really liked at Nova Gaia was the emphasis on breathing and being aware of the sensations within your own body. Paula and the other students made me feel very welcome right away". Scott

Somatics Method (Reduce Your Pain):

Somatics exercises are a painless and harmless living body (from the Greek, soma) approach based on the work of Hans Selye and Moshe Feldenkreis and designed by Thomas Hanna (Director of the Novato Institute for Somatic Research and Training, Novato, California). Somatics exercises help us to unlearn the habit of keeping the muscles contracted, allowing us to regain motor control of movement, flexibility and health. They are recommended for anyone who desires to move from pain to a lasting change in comfort, range of motion, posture and general functioning. These exercises are ideal for people of any age that suffer from reduced mobility, chest pains, chronic low back pain, hip, knee, shoulder and neck stiffness, people with demanding jobs like caregivers, health care practitioners and support staff. Because they are gentle, painless and harmless they are particularly suited for seniors.

They are also an excellent complement for anyone who's practicing yoga or in a fitness program.

Somatics classes are based on very specific exercises aimed at increasing flexibility, reducing muscle tightness and soreness, improving posture, breathing and general well being. They are performed sequentially, from week to week. Therefore, for better results, attendance to all classes is important. All participants go at the same pace and perform the same exercises. The exercises are simple, harmless and painless and performed on the floor. They are specifically designed to teach the nervous system to stop the cycle of pain and stiffness in the body and to regain motor control of all major muscle groups.

You will learn to relax and control all major muscle groups in the body. As a result, you may:

  • experience increased range of motion
  • move more freely, with comfort
  • sleep better
  • feel better, and pain free
